Kitesurfing Maui
World Class Kite Surf Destination
In the past, Maui has been known as the Mecca of the World for Windsurfing.
Since then, Maui has made a natural transition to a world class destination for Kitesurfing.
Maui provides the Ideal conditions - side shore winds and big north swells. Some say that kitesurfing is everything that windsurfing was supposed to be. The sport offers unbridled freedom with the ability to fly incredibly high and ride any size wave – all with minimal equipment.
Notable locations for this exciting sport are Kanaha Beach Park aka Kite Beach and Lanes – adjacent to world famous Ho’okipa Beach Park.
Kiting is performed in two different styles:
- kite surfing, using boards shaped like surfboards with the primarily aim to ride waves.
- kiteboarding where riders perform aerial acrobatics using “twin-tip” boards that resemble boat wake boards. Although both styles fly the same kites, they have very different yet equally exciting approaches to this amazing sport.
In competitions, kiters compete with one another. However, when not in competition, kiters support one another, helping anyone having trouble in the water or sharing tips and techniques on the beach. It is an extremely friendly community. Beginners get plenty of support from the seasoned vets who expect nothing in return.
