Why Retire on Maui?
A NYC Transplant’s View
I have been living and working on Maui since 1996, and came from New York City – with great good, good health care, and too many folks. Probably like you, I figured Why Not Maui?
Here’s how Maui stacks up, in my eyes: Great weather, nice folks, and good health care.
What? Good health care on Maui? I say Yes. I’ve had the same doctor and dentist since I moved here, and most people I know can say the same. I got Cancer eight years ago and got great treatment. My primary physician found my PSA a bit high, and going up the line the next doctor found some cancer after a biopsy. Going up the line further, I found who I believe to be the main guy for Cancer on Maui, Bobby Baker. He took care of it for me.
I got asked all the time why I didn’t go to the mainland for treatment. Why? Because this is where I live and some day will die. Why? Because Maui is the Number One island in the world (voted so over and over), and it’s nice to be here – not just for me, but for doctors and health professionals on Maui. As a Realtor I hear it all the time: I couldn’t live on Maui full time because we are retired, or thinking of retiring. To me, that’s a pretty good reason.
I just returned from my 50th high school reunion, and boy did my classmates look old by comparison. Why? I believe it’s because I live full time on Maui, with a lot less stress on my body and mind. I felt ten years younger than the others there, and have the pictures to prove it.
Most of these folks are retired with health issues, which is why they live in the big city. Not me. I may never retire again.
Why do I live on Maui? I wake to the same great weather almost every day. I have the same Doctors, if needed, to take care of me. It’s a great place to have your family come and visit (and sometimes leave!) while you live here full time and enjoy what I enjoy all the time!
